From Reef to Roof

Grand Park Kodhipparu Maldives Achieves 7th Consecutive Green Globe Certification

Grand Park Kodhipparu, Maldives proudly announces its 7th consecutive Green Globe Certification, achieving Gold Member status and reinforcing its long-standing commitment to responsible tourism in one of the world’s most environmentally sensitive destinations.

Framed through the resort’s sustainability philosophy, “From Reef to Roof,” this milestone reflects a fully integrated approach—one that connects marine conservation, guest engagement, and operational self-sufficiency into a single, purposeful experience.

Protecting What Lies Beneath: A Living House Reef

Surrounded by a thriving coral reef ecosystem, the resort is deeply connected to the marine environment that defines the Maldives. Home to a diverse range of species including corals, turtles, reef fish, and other protected marine life, the house reef is both a natural asset and a responsibility.

Ongoing conservation efforts are led by a Resident Marine Biologist, whose work combines scientific monitoring with guest engagement. Through coral restoration initiatives, regular reef clean-ups, and guided snorkelling experiences, the resort actively contributes to the regeneration and protection of its underwater environment.

Guests are invited to move beyond observation, gaining a deeper understanding of marine ecosystems while participating in efforts that help preserve them for future generations.

Understanding and Protecting Marine Life

Central to this approach is a strong emphasis on awareness and education. Marine life identification programmes, reef briefings, and guided exploration experiences are designed to build a meaningful connection between guests and the ocean.

Rather than simply showcasing marine beauty, the resort encourages responsible interaction—helping guests understand the delicate balance of reef ecosystems and the importance of protecting endangered species. This focus transforms time in the water into something more enduring: a sense of stewardship.

From Island to Infrastructure: Sustainable Operations That Matter

While the reef represents the foundation of the resort’s sustainability journey, its commitment extends across every aspect of island operations.

Energy consumption is carefully managed through the integration of renewable sources, including a solar power installation that reduces reliance on diesel-generated electricity. At the same time, water independence is achieved through an on-site desalination system, which converts seawater into fresh drinking water for the island.

This is complemented by the resort’s own water bottling plant, which has enabled the complete removal of single-use plastic water bottles since 2020—an important milestone in reducing waste across the island.

Waste management is approached with equal care, with systems in place to reduce, reuse, and recycle materials wherever possible, alongside composting initiatives that minimise food waste and support more sustainable operations.

Designing for a Changing World

Operating in a remote island environment requires a high degree of self-sufficiency. Without access to mainland utilities, resorts in the Maldives must generate their own energy and water, while managing all waste produced on-site.

Grand Park Kodhipparu has embraced this challenge as an opportunity—developing systems that not only reduce environmental impact but also enhance resilience. By investing in renewable energy, water production, and resource management, the resort ensures continuity of experience while reducing dependence on external supply chains.

In the current global climate, this approach offers an added layer of reassurance for travellers, reflecting a destination that is both responsible and prepared.

A Commitment That Goes Beyond Certification

While Green Globe Certification provides international recognition of sustainability performance, for Grand Park Kodhipparu it represents an ongoing journey rather than a fixed achievement.

Sustainability is embedded into daily operations, guest experiences, and long-term strategy—continually evolving to meet both environmental needs and guest expectations.

Raffaele Solferino, General Manager, who has led the resort since its pre-opening in 2017, commented:
“From the very beginning, we set out to build a resort that works in harmony with its environment, not against it. Achieving Green Globe Gold status for the seventh consecutive year is a reflection of that long-term vision and the consistency of our team.
‘From Reef to Roof’ is not just a concept—it is how we operate every day. It connects the protection of our house reef with the way we generate energy, manage water, and engage our guests. In today’s world, this level of responsibility is not only important for the environment, but also for the confidence of our guests, who want to know that where they travel is both sustainable and resilient.

‘As the explorer and environmentalist that Robert Swan said, ‘The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it.’ That idea resonates strongly with us—we believe it is our responsibility to act, here on our island, every day.”
